The bad news is that the involvement of your line manager is probably irrelevant

If you can demonstrate in excess of 25 years unchallenged access, as you state, the trust will have difficulty in challenging you. Effectively you would have acquired a right of access by prescription, ie. your use has not been challenged throughout the 25 plus years.
